Brighton bound
Two years ago, we arrived in San Francisco with a couple of suitcases and a lot of excitement.
Since then, California has provided a lot of amazing experiences, one way or another. We’ve travelled to beautiful spots I never knew existed, and done things we never thought we could. We’ve made some amazing friends, met some remarkable people and revelled in the idiosyncrasies and...

An IfYouOnly update
Very kind mention of IfYouOnly in the Observer today in a column by John Naughton on whether the death of the web, journalism or pretty much anything is overrated.
“it would be a mistake to write off the web as a medium for serious, long-form journalism. There’s a vast quantity of high-quality narrative journalism on it. The Guardian’s Bobbie Johnson recently came up with an...
Train, interrupted
So, we’re on a train.
The train pootles along.
The train shudders, and stops.
This is what appears.
Nobody was hurt, thank goodness — just an 18-wheeler with a trailer full of grain, ripped in half as if it were a piece of paper.

MediaGuardian memories
It’s 10 years — TEN YEARS — since the launch of MediaGuardian.co.uk, and to mark the occasion I was asked write a short bit about my time working on the site.
It’s online and in print today.
I’d been at the Evening Standard for a while by the time I joined the MediaGuardian website staff, who had already been causing trouble for two years by that point. I’d been...

The information patina
Over at Berg, Tom has written about the patina and wear of products (referencing previous thoughts by Matts W and J along the way):
“I’m not sure patina can be designed. After all, it’s a product of the relationship between product and owner.
“The form it takes can be shaped – by the materials used in a product, by the nature and frequency of operations that an owner might perform....

Weeknotes: 22
A fortnight since my last update, and it’s been heads down all the way. Two major deadlines, two smaller ones and a unexpected bonus job have kept me incredibly busy — but given that it’s the culmination of three months of work, I can’t really complain. It’ll certainly be nice to get paid.
The last couple of weeks have taught me something about discipline, and I’ve...
Tumblr's content attribution fix →
Starting today, reblogging will no longer insert attribution into the content/caption of the post except to quote content added by the parent post.
[…] This feature has an even bigger win: When creating a post, you can now attribute its content (eg. a pull quote or image) to a source outside of Tumblr. That source gets clearly attributed everywhere that post is reblogged on Tumblr.Excellent...

How do you make features work online?
The @IfYouOnly experiment is going well so far, with (as I write) 700 followers who are beginning to contribute ideas for articles. It’s also bringing forward some useful comments and questions, not least this post from Jake Brooks. He works for a design company in Brooklyn, so perhaps you might expect him to say this — but it’s worth saying nonetheless:What long-form journalism...
