This month’s Wired UK features an eight page article by me, reporting from Shanghai. It’s essentially a profile of Jan Chipchase, the former Nokia researcher who moved to China to join Frog Design. But also takes a look at one of Jan’s obsessions — China’s pirate technology culture, known as shanzhai. I think we’re going to be hearing a lot more about the fruits of this movement further down the line.
For all sorts of reasons, it was one of the most eye-opening assignments I’ve had and I’m glad it’s now hitting the streets.
I’ll update the post if the article makes it onto the web, but in the meantime British readers will have to make their way to their local newsagent to find a copy.
(San Francisco residents, may I recommend looking in Good News, on 24th Street between Sanchez and Noe. It was my local while we lived there, and the closest thing to a British newsagent I found in the city: good selection of American and foreign media, plus the owner, Sam, is always on hand to answer questions and help you out.)
